Mike Cornell here with Quick News of the Weird. It's brought to you by Shingle Restoration Services. For a free estimate call 740-328-9582. Look up "devotion" in the dictionary. You'll see this guy's picture. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, one father named David Jones journeyed 10 miles by car and another 17 miles by foot to make it to his daughter's wedding on time. After Friday morning's storms hit, Jones started driving from his home in South Carolina to Johnson City, Tennessee. The drive, which usually takes two hours, turned into a 12 hour trek. The roads were a mess..trees
down everywhere, power lines in the road and no cell phone service. When Jones finally arrived at the interstate exit, he found that the road was barricaded by state patrol officers who told him all the bridges were wiped out. Despite warnings from the officers, Jones told them that he was going to leave his car there and continue on foot since his daughter was getting married at 11am and he would walk her down the aisle. Jones---a veteran of
two marathons---grabbed his backpack from this car, put on his windbreaker and started walking with only his cell phone flashlight to guide the way. At about 3am, Jones encountered two workers clearing debris with a backhoe and bulldozer. He saw them, but they didn't see him. He was barely able to get out of the way as the backhoe driver was clearing mud. He made it through the debris-covered roads and encountered another state trooper who rolled his window down and asked him if he was the one trying to make it to his daughter's wedding. Jones said, 'Yes, sir. How did you know?' "We're all talking about you.." the trooper said. The trooper gave him a ride to a nearby town. Jones got some Gatorade from a store and set off on foot again, alerting cars to his presence with a red reflector he found along the way. Even though he was back in an area with cell service, he decided not to call his daughter. He didn't want to distract her or upset her in any way. In another stroke of
luck, a man in a passing truck offered Jones a ride. As it turned out, the driver happened to be an old co-worker named Steve. Jones made it to the church with time to spare. But his daughter and the groom had a fight and called the wedding off. Just kidding. The wedding went off without a hitch even though the ceremony was held by candlelight since the church had lost power. At the reception, Jones told his daughter about his ordeal. She experienced the predictable roller coaster of emotions...shock...amazement...pride..and joy. As a wedding gift, Jones presented his daughter and her new husband with the reflector he had carried.
