MCDONALD TRIAL

Licking County judge David Branstool is expected to announce his verdict Friday, in the trial of Jacob McDonald the Zanesville truck driver accused of causing a November 2023 crash that killed six people and injured 18 others. McDonald, 61, has entered not guilty pleas to more than 20 charges including aggravated vehicular homicide.

POLICE WEEK

This is National Police Week. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund will hold ceremonies, including the 37th Annual Candlelight Vigil today, to honor the fallen officers whose names have recently been added to the Memorial. National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

HYGIENE HUB

The United Way of Licking County has expanded its Hygiene Hub program to every high school in Licking County. The Hygiene Hub program provides students with free essential hygiene products, including deodorant, shampoo, laundry detergent, toothpaste, and more. Executive Director Deb Dingus says they can always use donations.

FIGHTING INFANT MORTALITY

Ohio recently launched an effort to improve birth outcomes and reduce infant mortality rates.

Kara Wente, director, Ohio Department of Children and Youth said through the Partner for Change initiative, the department is teaming up with several organizations across the state to take a highly effective model, pioneered by nonprofit Cradle Cincinnati, and expand it into new communities throughout Ohio.

CAMP FEELIN' FINE

Licking Memorial Health Systems will present Camp Feelin’ Fine, a free youth summer camp for children, ages 6 to 12, who are under a physician’s care for asthma. The one-day event, which is led by LMHS healthcare specialists, educates children about asthma while allowing them to participate in fun activities with other youth who also have the condition. Camp Feelin’ Fine will take place on Friday, June 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Infirmary Mound Park, located on Ohio 37 south of Granville. Participation in Camp Feelin’ Fine is free of charge; however, space is limited, and registration is required by Friday, May 30. To register, please call (220) 564-3192.

HWE BIG BAND

The Heisey Wind Ensemble brings their 40th Anniversary Season to a close on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. with a concert by the HWE Big Band. The concert will be held at the Reese Center on the OSU-Newark/COTC campus. Tickets are available only at the door. Adults are $15, seniors (60+) are $10 and students are $5.
